FAQ
Are you considering orthodontic treatment but unsure of where to start? Review the FAQs below to get answers to common questions asked by patients of ProSmiles. If you have additional questions or would like to speak to someone directly to discuss your requests and concerns, please feel free to contact the office and an orthodontic professional will get back to you as soon as possible.
What braces options are available?
Depending on the orthodontic problem being treated, there are a variety of options available for braces. In teens and children, the most common type recommended is the wire or bracket braces, which apply continuous force to slowly move teeth over a period of time. ProSmiles also offers gold and clear braces, lingual braces, and clear aligner therapy. Dr. McGuire will discuss all of your options with you when you come in for your appointment, and together you will determine which type is best for your situation.
How long will my child (or I) be in braces?
The duration of treatment is determined on a case-by-case basis. The orthodontist will provide an estimate for each individual, but on average, braces are worn for 24 to 28 months. This can be longer or shorter based on the severity of the orthodontic issue, and some situations may require a palatal expander to be worn for multiple months prior to application of braces.
Do I need to get a referral from my dentist to see an orthodontist?
No. Unlike with many health care plans, most dental insurance providers do not require a referral to cover orthodontic treatment. However, insurance usually only covers a portion of the cost, so it’s best to discuss your coverage with the ProSmiles staff before scheduling any service.
Does insurance cover all orthodontic procedures?
That depends on the type of insurance you have and your particular plan. Many dental insurance providers will offer coverage for children who need braces, but sometimes only if there is a functional problem and it’s not just esthetics. Insurance companies may provide coverage for adults, but often not if it is to treat a cosmetic problem. With some dental plans, orthodontic work can be insured if you purchase upgraded, optional coverage. Check with your insurance provider before undergoing any treatment at ProSmiles to ensure you are getting the most affordable option.
When should I bring my child in to see an orthodontist?
Once your child starts growing in adult teeth, pay attention to their alignment, spacing, and whether the bite is off. According to the American Association of Orthodontics, all children should have an orthodontic consultation by the age of 7 to start monitoring jaw or teeth-spacing issues. If your child is over the age of 7 and has never seen an orthodontist, schedule an appointment for a basic screening to determine if there are any problems that require treatment.
